Taipei's 2027 countdown, the one on 31 December 2026, is already on 臺北旅遊網 as listing 66403. The page was updated 14 October 2026. Concert on 市民廣場 19:00 to 01:00. Taipei 101 midnight show at the end. Free if you stand outside. The city still uses the old brand 臺北最High新年城. What changed for 2026 is the ridge. 象山 攝手平台 is closed 17 September 2026 to 13 April 2027. If your plan was "hike Elephant Mountain, photograph 101, walk down for noodles," rewrite it now.
You do not watch the 101 fireworks from the 101 observatory. The shells leave the tower. The observatory is inside the launch. Buy that ticket another night. On the 31st the useful seats are ground and ridge, and the ridge with the classic deck is under construction. 六巨石, further along the same trail system, is the substitute the city has been pointing people to all autumn. It is a hike, it is dark, it is crowded, and it is still better than a closed platform.
City Hall plaza is a concert, not a quiet view
If you want the singers, you want 市府路. Gates and bag checks follow whatever the police post in December. Arrive before 19:00 only if you care about the opening acts. The midnight shot of 101 from the plaza is over shoulders and phones. Bring a square of cardboard if you plan to sit. Portable stools get confiscated in some years. Cash for the stalls. MRT 台北市政府, Blue line, plus 台北101/世貿, Red line. After 01:00 you will wait.
Songshan Cultural Park is the quieter east-side lawn when the plaza is impossible. You still see the tower. You do not hear the stage. 四四南村 and the 101 mall doors are not viewing decks. They are overflow. 香堤大道 is a Christmas-light corridor, useful in late December if 繽紛耶誕玩台北 has actually switched on. travel.taipei still marks those 2026 light dates as 暫定. Last year that programme ran 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.
六巨石, not 攝手平台
The Xiangshan trail from MRT 象山 still opens. The photo platform does not. 六巨石 is a longer, rockier stop. Headlamp. Water. The path is one-way in spirit if not in signage after 22:00. Do not add 101 mall shopping on the way up. Start the hike by 20:30 if you want a rock to sit on. Coming down after midnight onto 信義路 is slow. A taxi on 松仁路 beats waiting at 象山 station with everyone else.
North-facing hotel rooms in 信義 are a paid version of the same view. If you did not already book one, you will not book one in December. Riverside at 彩虹河濱 is honest only if you want skyline glow, not the 60-second burst. Facts for the concert itself are on the NYE event page.
Trains, toilets, and the hour after midnight
Taipei Metro publishes special NYE timetables in December, not in October. Until that PDF exists, plan as if the last useful train is earlier than you want and the queue at 市政府 is 40 minutes. Ubike docks around 市府路 empty by 18:00. Toilets inside City Hall are for people already in a security line. Convenience stores on 松壽路 are the practical toilets, and they close their doors when the aisle is full.
Weather on 31 December in Taipei is often wet and 12–18°C. The plaza wind is colder than the mall. The 101 show is short. If you only care about the burst, you can watch from 六巨石 or Songshan lawn, then walk. If you care about the concert, you stand on 市府路 from 19:00 and you accept that the firework is a bonus over heads. Line-up names usually drop in December. The 2026 listing on travel.taipei does not name them yet.
