Taipei Children's Arts Festival 2026: 169 Performances Across 12 Districts To 6 August
The 2026 Taipei Children's Arts Festival opened on 30 June and runs to 6 August 2026, the annual summer programme co-presented by Taipei City Government and the Taipei Performing Arts Center. This year's edition is themed "Activate Children's Mode" and the numbers are large: 31 performance groups from France, Australia, Belgium, Spain, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan, spread across 34 productions and 169 shows, deployed across all 12 administrative districts of Taipei. Ten of those productions are ticketed (53 shows in total), the rest are free community and school outreach performances, and the festival explicitly invites adults as well as children.
The International Programme, Highlight By Highlight
The international ticketed line-up runs at the Taipei Performing Arts Center and the Shuiyuan Theater. Australia's Little Turtle Puppet Theatre opens with "Paper Naughtiness - Run Away" (2 to 5 July, Shuiyuan), a wordless visual piece that turns flat paper into living stage elements. France's Antilla Puppet Theatre brings "Strange Strange Cuckoo Clock" (17 to 19 July, NTU Cheng Hsin Theater), a near-silent fairytale about a clock whose thirteenth strike bends time. Belgium's tout petit presents "One, Two, Three, Don't Fall" at the TPAC Blue Box, a contemporary dance piece for children where the stage opens to the audience after the show for a hands-on gravity play session.
Taiwan-Made Productions That Sold Out Fast
The Taiwan-produced programme carries its own weight. Yi Hsing Pavilion Puppet Theatre's "Bean-Curd Grandpa Goes Loud", playing 11 to 12 July at Shuiyuan Theater, fuses glove puppetry with live music, Taiwanese proverbs and rock energy, and is one of the festival's fast-sellers. The adaptation of Chen Chih-Yuan's picture book "Xiao Yu's Walk" recreates the Caldecott-honoured story on stage with street-level Taipei scenes; the 2025 premiere sold out in minutes, and 2026 dates are doing the same. Indonesia's Paper Moon Puppet Theatre brings "Fly, My Beetle Friend", previously staged at the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, for a magic-show framing of forest ecology. Thailand's Preeda Punyachand classic "How the Moon Found His Friends" is reimagined by the local Wu Du You Ou troupe with Thai director Sirikan Boonthad.
Free Community, School, And Outdoor Shows
The festival's reach across all 12 districts is built on free programming rather than the ticketed programme. Community outreach performances, school shows, and outdoor productions in venues including Daan Park, the Bo-Pi-Liao Historic Block and Guling Street Avant-garde Theater take the work into neighbourhoods where ticketed theatre does not normally reach. The festival frames this as the core of its mission: not just bringing international work to paying audiences but putting performing arts in front of children where they already are. Each year's central theme, "Activate Children's Mode" for 2026, becomes the lens through which free programme content is curated.

Ticketed shows went on sale on 11 May 2026 via OPENTIX, with paid-member pre-sale running from 4 May. If a show is sold out, the free programme across the 12 districts is the fallback and runs through the full festival window to 6 August. The Taipei Performing Arts Center in Shilin is the main ticketed venue, with Shuiyuan Theater in Zhongzheng as the secondary hub; the free outdoor programme anchors in Daan Park and Bo-Pi-Liao. For a family with one weekend to spare, the late-July window is the densest, with multiple ticketed and free shows running back to back.
