Michelin announced the 2026 Bib Gourmand selection for Taiwan on 14 July 2026, and four Taipei restaurants made the new-entry list: Ching Jiao, Open Smile, Toriaezu Curry and Yu Yu 1969. The 2026 guide keeps 37 Bib Gourmand restaurants in Taipei out of 146 nationwide, with the full starred selection to be revealed at the ceremony on 21 July at Grand Hilai Taipei. More than 80 percent of the 13 new Taiwan entries this year are local Taiwanese cuisine or Hakka specialties, a clear signal from inspectors about where they see value-for-money quality in 2026.

The Four New Taipei Names, By Cuisine

The four new Taipei additions cover four distinct corners of casual dining. Ching Jiao specialises in chicken soup dishes, building a menu around broth-led plates. Open Smile focuses on Taiwanese braised-pork rice, the lu rou fan that is the city's most representative working meal, with a version the inspectors flagged for quality at the price point. Toriaezu Curry serves Japanese-style curry, the curry-rice format rather than the Southeast Asian kind, putting it in competition with long-established curry houses in the Zhongshan area. Yu Yu 1969 does Taiwanese stir-fry, the wok-hei-driven small-plates format that sits at the heart of Taipei neighbourhood dining.

Why This Year's List Reads Differently

Michelin international director Gwendal Poullennec framed the 2026 Bib Gourmand as placing greater emphasis on casual, authentic dining and on street food and local culinary culture. Read against the 13 new entries nationwide, that is not a slogan: the new names include three Tainan restaurants (Baa Wanli Goat for goat hotpot, Chan Chi for fish soup, and Zhu-Ji Dong Tsai Ya for duck), three New Taipei restaurants (Abba Hakka, Bei Ya Duck Thick Soup, Bitan Chiao Tou Goose), and two Hsinchu County restaurants (Monsoon for vegetarian Hakka, Yi Ge Rice Vermicelli for traditional Hsinchu snacks). The single new Taichung entry, Don Moo, is homemade duck. This is a list built around regional Taiwanese food, not international fine-dining imports, and Taipei's four new entries fit that frame exactly.

What Bib Gourmand Means For A Taipei Diner

Bib Gourmand is the Michelin distinction for restaurants offering "good quality, good value cooking", a separate category from stars that the guide uses to flag affordable places worth travelling to. For Taipei, this category has historically been where the most useful neighbourhood dining recommendations live, because the city's food culture is built on small shops and single-dish specialists rather than grand restaurants. With 37 Bib Gourmand restaurants in Taipei for 2026, the city remains the densest Bib Gourmand destination in Taiwan, ahead of Taichung at 23, Tainan at 30, Kaohsiung at 21, New Taipei at 18, Hsinchu County at 10 and Hsinchu City at 7.
