Yu Pin Yuan Iced and Hot Tangyuan (御品元冰火湯圓) is the Raohe Night Market branch of what travel guides call the most famous stall at Tonghua (Linjiang Street) Night Market. The brand has held the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand recommendation for several years and its Facebook page states the original Tonghua store has operated since 2012 (year 101 of the Minguo calendar), expanding to two direct-operated branches. The Raohe outlet at No. 178 Raohe Street opens from 17:00 to midnight (extended to 00:30 on weekends).

The signature dish is "ice and fire" tangyuan - chewy glutinous rice balls traditionally stuffed with black sesame or peanut paste, served hot over a bowl of shaved ice and drenched in sweet osmanthus syrup. Tangyuan are handmade and associated with the Lantern Festival and winter solstice in Taiwan. The combination of warm, oozing filling against cold shaved ice makes it a much-photographed dessert, and the stall is one of the few in Raohe with a dedicated roped-off queueing area.

If you want a sweet finish to a Raohe street-food crawl, this is the stall to head for. Order the mixed sesame-and-peanut tangyuan on ice, take a moment with the osmanthus syrup, and you will see why this dessert has earned its Michelin nod.
