North Coast Scenic Drive

Cruise along Taiwan's most dramatic coastline. Golden waterfalls, black sand beaches, old gold mines, and cliff-top ocean views make this the ultimate road trip from Taipei.

Why Drive the North Coast

Taiwan's North Coast (北海岸) is a stunning stretch of coastline between Taipei and the port city of Keelung. The Provincial Highway 2 winds along cliffs, past fishing villages, volcanic rock formations, and old mining towns. The route is easily done in a day from Taipei and offers a diverse mix of natural and cultural attractions. From the golden sands of Fulong Beach to the rust-colored cascade of the Golden Waterfall, every stop is a highlight.

Fulong Beach

A wide golden-sand beach with calm, swimmable waters. The Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival is held here every summer.

Golden Waterfall

A rust-colored cascade near Jinguashi, stained by mineral deposits from the old gold mines. Striking and photogenic.

Jinguashi Gold Mines

The Gold Museum tells the story of Taiwan's mining boom. You can even touch the world's largest gold ingot on display.

Top Things to Do Along the Coast

Fulong Beach & Sand Festival

Fulong is one of the best beaches near Taipei. The annual sand sculpture festival transforms the shore into a gallery of giant, intricate artworks.

Golden Waterfall & Yin-Yang Sea

The waterfall's rust color comes from iron and copper deposits. Nearby, the Yin-Yang Sea shows a sharp divide between blue ocean and yellowish runoff.

Jinguashi Gold Museum

Explore the old mining tunnels, Japanese-era dormitories, and the crown jewel — the world's largest gold bar, which you are allowed to touch.

Bitou Cape & Nanya Rocks

Bitou Cape offers a rugged coastal trail with sea arches and cliffs. Nanya is known for its striped sandstone and unusual rock patterns.

Driving & Travel Tips

Getting There

  • Car rental: The most flexible option. Rent in Taipei and drive Highway 2.
  • Scooter: Popular for experienced riders. Wind can be strong on the coast.
  • Bus: Buses 1815, 862, and 856 serve most coastal stops. Slower but scenic.
  • Tour bus: Many Taipei hotels offer North Coast day tours. Convenient but less flexible.

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring & autumn: Clear skies and mild temperatures make for the best driving and views.
  • Summer: Best for beach time at Fulong, but traffic is heavy and parking is scarce.
  • Weekdays: Avoid the weekend rush, especially at Jiufen and Yehliu.
